Exploring Ta Prohm and Angkor Thom

Ta Prohm

Even if every one’s picture of a white Christmas is frolicking in the snow, achieving this is quite difficult in the southern hemisphere. Hence why I have funnelled my holiday itinerary towards our neighbours in the tropics. Summer is the time to avoid massive toggery anyway. No need to wear three layers of consumerism. It also makes being #minimalistic (which I noticed is becoming a real trend these days) too easy.

We landed Cambodia on Christmas Eve and I knew visiting Angkor Wat, where we greeted the sunrise on Christmas day, was implacable. But if there was another place to visit, it would be the fame of Lara Croft that put this temple on the map of every traveller’s bucket list.

Ta Prohm

Ever since Tomb Raider came out, the world wanted to see Ta Prohm, this heritage site tucked in the quaint resort town of Siem Reap.

Though other Angkorian temples were taken inspiration from in the feature film, Ta Prohm was the most visually prominent among them.

Just like I imagined, the trees engulfed this temple's walls. It was as if the place of worship itself was literally one with nature.

Angkor Thom (and The Bayon Temple)

Angkor Thom, on the other hand, was vast not enveloped by the flora that surrounded it.

In its centre was The Bayon Temple that pointed up to the sky.

Monks who visited the temple.

Monks up to this day still visit the temple.

Numerous bas reliefs details on every part of the temple. How tedious it must have been to create this entire place from the ground up.

Thank you Serica! It wasn’t as crowded early in the morning. I was expecting fewer tourists because it was Christmas day. But by about 10AM, the place was flooded with people!
